Building a proofreading or editing business can feel overwhelming when you’re doing it all on your own.

I’m Julie, a working proofreader and the founder of The Proofreader Greenhouse. I started TPG because this work can feel isolating, whether you’re finding your first clients or have been proofreading for years.

Proofreading and editing are rewarding, but most of us spend our days behind screens, figuring things out on our own. I wanted to create a space where proofreaders and editors could connect, get practical support, and grow with confidence.

The seed for my career was planted early. As a little girl, I dreamed of being a teacher. I even turned a room in our basement into a classroom, complete with old textbooks, and made my younger brother be my “student.”

Those basement “lessons” were the first signs of what would become a lifelong love of words, learning, and helping others thrive.

How it started...

By eighth grade, that seed started to grow. I had an incredible English teacher who inspired me to narrow my focus to grammar, writing, and reading—my favorite subjects.

Teaching English to middle and high school students felt like the perfect path, and after college, I spent 13 years as a classroom teacher. That teacher brain still shows up in The Proofreader Greenhouse in the clear, step-by-step guidance I love to share.

After a family relocation, the branches of my career spread from the classroom to an office building. Writing and proofreading untold numbers of documents for a nonprofit organization kept my language skills sharp.

I didn't know it at the time, but another seed was about to sprout.

By 2016, I had a growing desire for a career that would give me more flexibility to be present for my family while still using my love of language.

While scrolling Pinterest one day, I saw a post about transcript proofreading. I didn’t know anything about transcripts or the legal system, but with my background in English education, I felt confident I could do the work.

I completed a training course, launched my business, and started working with clients that summer. TPG will show you practical ways to move from learning to landing work too.

It didn't take long for my teacher's heart to look for new ways to help others. I imagined a space where proofreaders and editors could connect, learn, and feel supported. That vision became The Proofreader Greenhouse, which officially launched in 2023.

The plant theme was an easy choice. During the pandemic, I bought a few houseplants to brighten my space, and before long, I was taking care of more than 50. My new hobby brought me joy during a season of disconnection, and I wanted The Proofreader Greenhouse to feel the same way: warm, welcoming, and designed to help you grow.
